Hi, Friends!

I'm discovering new ways to reach out and find more people who are wanting to learn about repairing caring for old quilts - so we can have more quilters "preserving history one quilt at a time".

I've just listed my big workshop on Global Teacher Connection - a great website which lists all sorts of virtual classes and lectures, and also hosts informational presentations for teachers, guild program chairs, and so on.

My new promotional video is linked at the photo above.  Full information and registration are on my website ...

This week’s tidbit:  A hand-me-down set of vintage/antique Mosaic/Grandmother’s Flower Garden blocks.

I’ll be teaching a virtual quilt care and repair workshop in winter 2024.  One thing I’ll be talking about is learning how to tell the age of the fabrics in old quilts.  These blocks have a secret key to their age.

clarissa centers from Making A Lather

you may remember I wrote this about my clarissa quilt.

I saw this quilt on sane, crazy, crumby blog and loved it. She loved it from Kathy quilts. And Kathy loved it from the Shelbourne museum. Quilting is a hobby that links us to the past and to the future, a gift that keeps on giving. Thank you to all the lovely quilters who ply their art. You have enriched my life. And my daughter is an amazing quilter, too.......

I am happy to say all 36 centers are done. And, I thought, I would put it away again for ...

clarissa quilt progress from Making A Lather

I rediscovered this project while cleaning up messes. I had a stack of related fabric scraps that I really liked, and, I started a year or so ago to make an old hourglass block quilt. I thought before I put it away in the ufo closet, I would just cut to make sure I would have enough and make 36 centers. sounded easy. the centers only have 4 hourglass blocks.

I cut most of what I had, and, then, took count to see if I would need to add more fabrics. I definitely need more. It was not as easy ...

Tis The Season from Collector with a Needle

Hazel 6 months old

Seems the holidays have come earlier this year!  We are busier than ever.

Maybe it's the new kitten we adopted? Or maybe, we have adapted the slower pace forced from Covid surges.

Either way - we are looking forward to new projects and new opportunities in 2022!  Watch this space for more details.

I was pleased with Carol's mention of my social media posts in Issue 146 of Quiltmania.  It was fun to see which thumbnail photos she selected.  It was a complete surprise to me!

More on this issue HERE

"Wild and Untamed"—An Exhibit from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

Both Teri and I (Kara) have a love of Baltimore Album quilts—especially since we live in the great state of Maryland, where these quilts originated. Most of these quilts were created in a short period of time and have not just fascinated us, but they also intrigued the well-known father of occupational therapy, Dr. William Rush Dunton. Dr. Dunton believed that quilting could be therapeutic for women (and men) who suffered from mental health issues. He was also fascinated with old quilts, specifically the intricacies and detail of the Baltimore Album quilts. This interest led to groundbreaking research in ...

A Rose by Any Other Name... from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

If you have been reading our blog for a while, you will know that Teri and I (Kara) have a love for all things vintage, especially quilts. Over the past few years, our collection has grown, and while most of my quilts are still in storage, that hasn't stopped me from purchasing a few more since I have been back stateside. My most recent purchase was a quilt style that I have been hoping to add to my collection—an appliqué quilt—and the Rose of Sharon block is one of my favorites. This Rose of Sharon quilt may ...

Mother’s Choice Remake Quilt from The Cutting Table Quilt Blog - A Blog for Quilters by Quilters

The Mother's Choice Remake quilt from Missouri Star Quilt Co.

Jenny is a rescuer of old, antique blocks.

She sifts through stacks of orphan blocks at yard sales and antique shops, imagining the quilters who started – but never finished – so many years ago.

When Jenny spotted a long-forgotten Mother’s Choice block, she fell in love! And then…she used a sprinkling of Missouri Star magic to make that pattern new again!

The Mother's Choice Remake quilt from Missouri Star Quilt Co.

Mother’s Choice Remake is a beautiful, simplified version of the old-fashioned Mother’s Choice. This pretty jelly roll quilt is made easy with half-square triangles, flying geese, snowballed corners, and – best of all – zero Y-seams!

You may ...

Happy to find at last a pattern requiring only 5 wool balls, as I have several batches of 5 balls in my stash.
Pattern found here : Click. Susanne's blog is a Danish one, although the google translation is a mess and I could rely on the numbers and the pictures (thanks for those close pictures!) to progress with my knitting... I am quite anxious regarding the completed result...

Crochet Giant Granny Square

At the begining of this new lockdown I started searching my stash of yarns with the aim of creating a new multicolor giant granny square blanket.

I picked up all the colored yarns I found for needles or crochet number 4, keeping the brown, grey and beige for another project.

Here I used the brand Fonty quality Ambiance 100 % superwash Woll superfine SW.

This is a very simple and pleasant project. It is never boring as you change colors. I love playing with varigated colors when I work on a project, that is quilting or knitting.

Two Antique Quilts from Quilting Stories

Summer in France

Summer in France

Two antique quilts

Hi everyone! Back to Greece... and to my blog after a long summer in France. I am still busy there restoring my 19th century summer house bought five years ago. I love doing this job and especially  decorating, with the drawback that it keeps me temporarily away from quilting.

I have sent most of my quilts, the antique ones and those done by me, from Greece to France, with the aim of a future exhibition, but not only : my house is going to be filled with quilts on beds, on couches, hanged on walls...

The above picture ...

Virtual Quilts: Viewing, Studying and Enjoying Them in New Ways from Repro Quilt Lover

If you belong to a quilt guild, visit quilt exhibits, participate in workshops, take classes, or study quilt history, you have likely had an event canceled or postponed. If you are anything like me it’s been a lot more than one. This has left me wondering how I can fulfill my desire to view quilts and, equally important, to socialize and learn from other quilters. I miss my people! How can I get my quilt fix when everything I used to do is canceled or on hold?

Fortunately, I didn’t have to create the opportunities, I just needed ...

Pattern Cover
We are pleased to announce our new appliqué quilt pattern, Fig Leaf and Flowers.

The pattern is a reproduction of a 19th century quilt quilt in our collection.   The quilt finishes at 80" square.  The original quilt is not perfectly aligned by today's standards - but the pattern is!  The outer edge has a bit of a wave - the pattern does not.

For now, it is a digital download only, available on the pattern page here and on our Etsy shop.  It is designed to print on your home printer - no enlargements needed.  The full size pattern includes ...

Checking in with my stitching friends!
Wishing you all the best, thinking of you.

A couple stitching friends sent me photos of their current work and gave me permission to share with you.

For the berry stems, she's using an embroidered chain stitch.

Antique Quilt from our collection

Radical Rose from Collector with a Needle

Original Quilt from our Collection
We love seeing quilters making projects with our patterns.
Our 'Radical Rose' has been a popular pattern for us.
One of my favorite things is seeing the fabric selections, and how they add their own personal choices.
Since we published the pattern, a few blocks and one similar quilt have turned up.  They appear to be "newer" and have the look of a "traced" pattern where the shapes and lines are thinker and less pronounced.  We are proud of the accuracy of our pattern to the 19th century original in our collection.
We also include ...

Kaffe Fassett in Bath, Part 2 from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

The American Museum and Gardens in Bath, UK, opened its doors in 1961 for the first time at Claverton Manor. It is the only museum outside the United States dedicated to the American arts. Unfortunately, the manor part of the museum was closed for Christmas decorating, but thankfully the Kaffe Fassett exhibit was held in another building, so much to may delight, we were able to see the unique combination of old and new quilts. As promised, here are the rest of the quilts from the exhibit. We hope you enjoy them!
